Ramadoss wants UGC to withdraw draft regulations
The HinduPMK founder S. Ramadoss has petitioned the University Grants Commission to withdraw the Draft University Grants Commission Regulations, 2025. In a representation to the UGC secretary, Dr. Ramadoss contended that the draft regulations “usurped and completely took away the powers of the State governments” in the selection and appointment of Vice- Chancellors to the State-run universities. Citing certain provisions in the draft regulations, Dr. Ramadoss charged that they were highly condemnable as it was “dictatorial” and it attempted to appropriate extra constitutional powers to dictate terms that undermine the autonomy of State-run universities. The draft regulations providing more powers to the Chancellor/Governor over the selection process of the Vice- Chancellor “effectively amounts to doing away with the powers, rights and roles of the State government in the process,” Dr. Ramadoss argued. UGC has to constitute an appropriate committee comprising academicians and educationists for the purpose of drafting any new regulations or guidelines and thereafter it should be circulated for comments from every stakeholder.” Read also: Tamil Nadu will fight draft UGC regulations legally, politically, says Stalin
