Consider framing laws to secure domestic workers' rights: Supreme Court to Centre
India TodayThe Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the central government to consider the necessity of introducing a legal framework to effectively address the concerns and rights of domestic workers. Noting that there are gaps in legislative frameworks safeguarding domestic workers’ rights, the court emphasised that no effective legislative or executive action has been undertaken thus far to enact a statute that could benefit millions of vulnerable domestic workers across the country. However, the court acknowledged that several states, such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Maharashtra, have taken initiatives to safeguard domestic workers' rights and welfare. The court clarified that while the judiciary must not overstep its bounds and interfere in the legislative domain, it remains the legislature’s duty to ensure an equitable and dignified life for domestic workers.
