India is witnessing a stark increase in cases of cyber fraud. In the latest reported case, an 83-year-old retired man from Panchkula, Chandigarh, ended up losing Rs 57 lakh after receiving a call from fake police officers on WhatsApp. The scam unfolded as the victim, Rajendra Kumar, reportedly a retired employee of HMT, received a WhatsApp call on 16 January from an individual claiming to be a police officer from the crime branch headquarters in Hyderabad, reports The Times of India. The caller informed Rajendra that his name had been linked to a large money transfer fraud case involving a man named Goyal, who had allegedly fled abroad. Reportedly, on 17 January, Rajendra, under continuous threats and pressure from the scammers, ended up transferring Rs 30.9 lakh from his IDBI bank account to a fraudulent account provided by the scammers.
