Why do some native animals prefer backyards over bushland?
ABCFresh research shows that urban areas – like your backyard – could be a haven for native wildlife in Western Australia. Animals – like the critically endangered western ringtail possum – were tracked in Western Australia’s Albany region and researchers found many were living exclusively in residential gardens. From lush native vegetation to completely paved spaces with a lone tree - all types of gardens can attract native animals. Guests: Bronte Van Helden - PhD Student and research assistant at the University of Western Australia Janet Traylen - lives on the outskirts of Albany and has helped Bronte with her work and volunteered Professor Owen Nevin - CEO of the Western Australian Biodiversity Science Institute
