Air Force faces a shortage of pilots amid recruitment challenges: Reports

India Today

The Indian Air Force is grappling with a critical shortage of pilots, with recent reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence highlighting the severity of the issue. Despite plans to induct 222 trainee pilots annually between 2016 and 2021, the Air Force failed to meet its targets. Adding to the crisis is the Air Force's dwindling squadron strength, with only 31 fighter squadrons currently operational, far below the sanctioned strength of 42. The Air Force is exploring measures to improve retention, including better career progression opportunities and incentives for experienced personnel," sources said. The Parliamentary report also highlighted the increasing representation of women in the Air Force, noting that women now constitute 14% of the officer cadre, with many serving in combat roles.
