Cambridge professor cautious about calling vaccines ‘safe and effective’
The TelegraphA Cambridge professor has said he is cautious about calling vaccines “safe and effective” because there will always be medical exceptions that need to be taken into account. Sir David Spiegelhalter, emeritus professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, said a “very small proportion” of people have been harmed by the AstraZeneca vaccine, of which more than 50 million doses have been given in the UK. Sir David said he could not comment on Mr Scott’s “really unfortunate” situation but said that while people had been harmed by the vaccine, it was only a small proportion of the millions of people who received the jab. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said he had initially been sceptical about the blood clot risk from the AstraZeneca vaccine, but that it later became “quite clear and apparent” it was an issue, albeit very rare, that meant the harms “could very well outweigh the benefits” for young people.
