Ronald Araujo has a Barcelona deal until 2031. So why could he still leave?
New York TimesRonald Araujo extended his Barcelona deal until 2031 in January with improved terms — but there is more to it than meets the eye. “Our focus is on extending the contracts of important players in our squad,” sporting director Deco told Spanish broadcaster Movistar before Barcelona’s Champions League game against Benfica last month. But club sources say Araujo is the only one whose new deal includes a feasible release clause while they say Pedri, Gavi and Cubarsi’s deals include figures “out of any reasonable reach”. “If it depends on me, I will stay in this club for many more years, that’s for sure,” Araujo said in the mixed zone of the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys last month after scoring in Barca’s Champions League draw with Atalanta. Dressing-room sources say Araujo’s lack of fluidity in build-up play was the main reason for that switch, despite Flick saying afterwards that he wanted to protect the Uruguayan after a yellow card.
