Netherlands disproportionately involved in deforestation: WWF

NL Times

The Netherlands played a disproportionately large role in deforestation worldwide in the period from 2004 to 2017, mainly due to the country's import of and trade in soy for livestock farming, according to a report by the World Wildlife Fund, NOS reports. Deforestation also exacerbates the climate problem, WWF forest expert Merjin van Leeuwen said to NOS. According to Van Leeuwen, the Netherlands therefore plays a relatively large role in deforestation. While that legislation is still in the making, consumers can already play a role in fighting deforestation by eating more plant-based, Van Leeuwen said to the broadcaster.
