Domestic violence calls 'overwhelming' NT Police, Acting Commissioner Michael Murphy says

Key points: The NT emergency call centre is receiving more than 75 domestic violence reports per night It is placing major pressure on police, with high-demand locations under-resourced The NT coroner is currenty mid-way through an inquest into domestic violence Speaking on ABC Radio Darwin on Wednesday, Acting Commissioner Michael Murphy said the current demand on police was "incredible" due to the quantity of calls into the emergency communications centre. There are limited police resources in areas of the NT where domestic violence rates are high. The inquest has heard of a 117 per cent increase in domestic and family violence reports over the past decade, with a further 73 per cent increase expected over the next 10 years, according to police modelling.
