Bendigo program is bridging gaps between employers and jobseekers facing barriers to finding work in Australia
Myint Shwe Meh lived in a refugee camp in Myanmar for about 20 years before calling Australia home. "It's an acronym that is Growing Regional Opportunities for Work," program manager Petra McLoughlin said. "We work with businesses and hiring organisations to understand how they can change their recruitment processes to really provide opportunities for local people who have a disadvantage or a barrier to work," Ms McLoughlin said. Multicultural Services employment program manager Sylvia Phan said she had generally found Bendigo employers generous with employment opportunities for culturally and linguistically diverse applicants. "It's a matter of us as an organisation advocating for our job seekers from multicultural backgrounds," Ms Phan said.
