Guantanamo Bay's oldest detainee Saifullah Paracha released after 17 years

The oldest prisoner held at Guantanamo Bay has been released and returned to Pakistan, according to the foreign ministry in Islamabad and the US Department of Defense. Key points: Saifullah Paracha has returned to Pakistan after more than 17 years in custody in Cuba He was held on suspicion of ties to Al Qaeda, but never charged The US Department of Defense said 35 detainees remained at Guantanamo Bay, with 20 eligible for transfer Saifullah Paracha, 75, was reunited with his family on Saturday after more than 17 years in custody at the detention centre in Cuba. The DOD said in a statement that the US appreciated "the willingness of Pakistan and other partners to support ongoing US efforts focused on responsibly reducing the detainee population and ultimately closing the Guantanamo Bay facility". In March 2020, after a judge threw out those witness accounts and the government decided not to seek a new trial, Mr Paracha's son was released and sent back to Pakistan.
