Consumer confidence declines again in May, 4th time in 5 months, particularly for older Americans
Associated PressConsumer confidence fell in May as Americans, particularly older ones, became more pessimistic about the labor market, on top of elevated anxiety over inflation. The business research group’s present situation index — which measures consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions — fell to 148.6 from 151.8 last month. “While consumer confidence has fallen across all age and income categories over the past three months, May’s decline reflects a particularly notable worsening in the outlook among consumers over 55 years of age,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, senior director of economics at The Conference Board. The Conference Board noted that consumers’ assessment of current employment conditions saw significant deterioration, even as the labor market remains resilient in the face of rising rates.
