1 Navy sailor killed, 4 injured in freeway crash in rural San Diego County

LA Times

Firefighters and Border Patrol agents work to rescue the occupants trapped in the wreckage of a Navy van after it crashed Friday morning off Interstate 8 near Jacumba Hot Springs. One Navy sailor was killed and four others were injured when their van crashed Friday morning off Interstate 8 near the rural San Diego County area of Jacumba Hot Springs, authorities said. Though it was not immediately clear whether those involved were SEALs, the Navy describes SEAL teams as “the heart of the NSW force.” The crash happened shortly before 10 a.m. as the sailors’ Chevrolet Express van was headed west toward San Diego when it veered north off the freeway near Carrizo Gorge Road, California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Travis Garrow said. In an email, Garrow wrote that “at this point in the investigation alcohol drugs are not suspected to be a factor.” Hours after the van crash, a Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet based at Naval Air Station Lemoore went down about 2:30 p.m. near Trona in the Mojave Desert, killing the pilot, the Navy said.
