
Man held for smuggling fertilizer in Erode
The HinduIn a joint operation conducted by the Civil Supplies Criminal Investigation Department (CS-CID and the Department of Agriculture, officials seized five lorries and 185 tonnes of subsidised urea intended for smuggling in Erode. Based on a tip-off, the team raided a private warehouse at C. Mettupalayam in Chithode on Saturday and found 93 tonnes of subsidised urea fertilizer stored for smuggling. The Central government sells a bag of urea to farmers at ₹266, but it was being repacked and sold under a different company name in other States for ₹1,900 per bag. After laboratory reports confirmed that the urea had been supplied by the Central government for farmers, the Erode CS-CID police registered a case for illegally sourcing fertilizer and selling them for personal gain, violating regulations.
