“Everyone who wrote Gov. A veteran GOP Florida operative, similarly granted anonymity to discuss internal dynamics, said Tuesday they would be “shocked” if Uthmeier — who is currently in Italy with DeSantis on a trade mission — didn’t get the post. The House and Senate seats alone are already upending Florida’s future political landscape, as both Waltz and Rubio were considered possible candidates for the 2026 governor’s race. DeSantis said last week that he wasn’t angling for a job in the Trump administration, telling students at Notre Dame that “me quarterbacking the Sunshine State is probably how I make the biggest difference.” In regards to the Senate race, one Miami-Dade GOP consultant, who was granted anonymity to discuss the short list speculation, predicted that DeSantis would want someone who can run for the job in 2026 — pointing to other picks he has made while governor. On Tuesday, Sen. John Fetterman called Rubio a “strong choice” and said he would vote to confirm him in a post on X. Rubio was previously in the mix to be Trump’s running mate, was integral to shaping Trump’s policy on Latin America during his first term and is co-chair of the Senate Intel Committee.
