Budget allocation sought to address tidal flooding issue in Kochi

The Hindu

Kochi Mayor M. Anilkumar has urged the State Finance Minister to allocate ₹10 crore in the 2025-26 Budget for dredging and deepening the backwaters within the Kochi Corporation limits. The Mayor’s appeal comes amid complaints from residents near the backwaters and stormwater canals about the increasing instances of tidal flooding. The Mayor said that he met the Finance Minister along with Education Standing Committee Chairman V. A. Sreejith to request a Budget allocation for 2025-26 to dredge the backwaters. The siltation of the backwaters has also impacted fishing, affecting around 2,000 fishermen and 10,000 workers in related industries due to reduced fishing activity.
