Law panel recommends compulsory registration of NRI, OCI marriages in India
Hindustan TimesAll marriages between Non-Resident Indians or Overseas Citizens of India and Indian citizens should be compulsorily registered in India, the Law Commission recommended to the Union government on Friday. In November, the ministry of external affairs requested the Law Commission to review and enhance regulations for marriages involving NRIs and Indian citizens, addressing issues like partner abandonment, particularly of brides. In a report titled “Law on Matrimonial Issues Relating to Non-Resident Indians and Overseas Citizens of India” to the law ministry, panel chairman justice Ritu Raj Awasthi expressed concerns over the “rising” cases of fraudulent marriages between NRIs and Indian citizens, and recommended a comprehensive law to deal with such matters. It is further recommended that all marriages between the NRIs/OCIs and Indian citizens should be made compulsorily registered in India,” the law panel’s report said.
