Geofencing, enhanced KYC protocols among key measures to tackle online gaming concerns

Introduction of technological interventions including geofencing, enhanced Know Your Customer protocols and restricting access to gaming platforms operating in violation of the local laws were among the key suggestions discussed at a high-level meeting hosted by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau on Wednesday. The meeting has aimed to address the rising concerns over online gaming addiction and its financial repercussions and brought together All India Gaming Federation, the Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports, leading gaming platform executives, Internet and Telecom Service Providers, and representatives from the Department of Telecommunications. A formal appeal has also been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking the establishment of a centralised regulatory body to oversee both domestic and offshore gaming platforms, ensuring compliance with State-specific legal frameworks. With online gaming’s popularity soaring among young people, authorities have raised alarms over increasing cases of addiction, mounting financial losses, and tragic incidents of suicide linked to gaming-related debts.
