Chargers’ Justin Herbert melts under Chiefs pressure in loss at Kansas City

— Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert spent more time looking at the sky than downfield at his wide receivers on Sunday. Herbert was sacked five times by Kansas City’s suddenly stingy defense, and even when the Chiefs failed to get to him, they had a disrupting impact on his game. On the second series, it was Willie Gay Jr. who brought down Herbert just outside the Kansas City red zone, and that ultimately forced the Chargers to kick a tying field goal. Omenihu’s sack foiled another promising drive near midfield late in the second quarter, when the game was still tied 17-all, and the Chiefs took possession with just over 2 minutes to go. Mahomes completed four straight passes, got some help from a pass interference call in the end zone, and hit Kelce with a touchdown pass to give Kansas City a 24-17 lead at the break.
