Volcano near Iceland’s Grindavik erupts for sixth time since December
Al JazeeraMet office reports eruption does not ‘present a threat to life’, and Reykjavik’s Keflavik Airport says flights unaffected. A volcano in southwestern Iceland has erupted for the sixth time since December, according to the country’s meteorological office. The eruption started at 9:26pm on Thursday, with live video images showing red lava spewing out of a new fissure on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said. Iceland’s national airport and air navigation service provider Isavia said in a statement that flights to and from the country were “operating normally despite the ongoing eruption”. The most recent eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula, home to some 30,000 people or nearly 8 percent of the country’s total population, ended on June 22 after spewing fountains of molten rock for 24 days.
