247 vehicles taken into preventive custody during New Year celebrations

The Hindu

It was a busy night on Tuesday for the city police as thousands had thronged beaches, including the Marina, and other places to celebrate the New Year. A total of 247 vehicles belonging to youth who were involved in bike racing and other traffic violations — such as stunts, triple riding, riding without helmets and use of tampered silencers in vehicles — were taken into preventive custody. The police had also put up barricades, and deployed vehicle inspection teams at 425 locations, including Mylapore, Kilpauk, Triplicane, T. Nagar, Adyar, St. Thomas Mount, Parry’s, Washermanpet, Pulianthope, Anna Nagar, Kolathur and Koyambedu limits. The traffic police had formed 30 special road safety teams, which patrolled on two-wheelers to raise awareness of safety among members of the public, and provide necessary assistance. The police also made use of automatic number plate recognition and closed-circuit television cameras to detect traffic rule violations.
