What will Howie Roseman, Eagles do with a $30 million salary-cap increase?
New York TimesINDIANAPOLIS — Howie Roseman, like every general manager, celebrated what might as well have been called the “Salary Cap Sweepstakes.” On the Friday before the Philadelphia Eagles left for the NFL Scouting Combine, the league announced it was fully repaying teams the money it borrowed during the coronavirus pandemic. Roseman said Tuesday that the Eagles “never want to see them wearing different colors,” and “if they want the opportunity to come back, we’d want to have the opportunity to bring them back.” GO DEEPER Imagining the Eagles' future with and without Jason Kelce But if Kelce and Cox choose to retire, Philadelphia must account for an accelerated dead money hit totaling $12.9 million, according to Over The Cap. But instead of making the safety position even more of an immediate need, Roseman could keep Byard on the roster by 1) keeping his contract as is, or 2) spreading out Byard’s 2024 cap hit in a potential restructure that would convert part of the safety’s $9.6 million base salary into guaranteed money across the three voidable seasons that already exist in his deal. Roseman did call Smith “an incredible person, incredible player” on Tuesday, then added, “Without getting into specifics, those are guys you don’t really want to leave.” GO DEEPER NFL free-agency rankings 2024: Top 10 players at each position But Dickerson, a 2021 second-round pick, has a contract that expires after the 2024 season.
