Microsoft's Majorana 1 chip could make a quantum computer more powerful than all current computers combined

Microsoft has made a breakthrough in the world of quantum computing with the launch of its quantum processor called Majorana 1. Microsoft Majorana 1 uses the world’s first topoconductor, which the company says will help “realise quantum computers capable of solving meaningful, industrial-scale problems in years, not decades.” In January, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang had said that quantum computers will become “very useful” eventually, but that it would take decades to actually come into use. “In the same way that the invention of semiconductors made today’s smartphones, computers and electronics possible, topoconductors and the new type of chip they enable offer a path to developing quantum systems that can scale to a million qubits and are capable of tackling the most complex industrial and societal problems,” says Microsoft. Microsoft says that the new design used in the Majorana 1 quantum chip would allow a single processor to hold a million qubits while being small enough that it can fit in your hand. To put this in perspective, the company says that a quantum computer with a million qubits would be far more powerful than all the world’s current computers combined.
