Met Police officer hailed as an inspirational role model is sacked for offensive tweets about Jewish people and non-Muslims

Daily Mail

A Metropolitan Police officer has been sacked for posting offensive tweets about Jewish people and non-Muslims. Ms Begum denied gross misconduct and said her comments - which she agreed could be deemed discriminatory - amounted to simple misconduct and a final warning would be a sufficient outcome. Ruby Begum was hailed an inspirational role model after footage showing her bravely confronting anti-lockdown protesters while wearing a hijab went viral two years ago Most of her antisemitic comments were made in 2014 when Israel launched a ferocious attack against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip The hearing was told accusations against Ms Begum that she had held an interest in extremist preachers and had failed to disclose her links to a jihadi woman living inside a so-called Islamic State caliphate in Syria had been dropped over a lack of evidence. They also said Ms Begum underwent two rounds of equality and diversity training, once in 2014 when joining as a special constable and again in 2016 when becoming a full-time police constable. The hearing was told that the defendant believed her comments on Jewish people, Arabs and non-Muslims amounted to misconduct, but not gross misconduct which would result in her dismissal.
