Kanye West’s New Video Looks Like It Was Directed by Lisa Frank

Slate

When Kanye West announced that he would debut his new video on Ellen, some fans wondered whether the talk show was really the right place. The main question people are likely to come away with after watching the video is “Is this a joke?” Centering on obviously faked footage of Kanye riding a motorcycle with fiancée Kim Kardashian, who is silhouetted but topless, the only thing that changes, besides their many bike-riding positions, is the rear-projected landscapes: Their love cruise takes them in front of pastel American terrains, timelapse sunsets, and, especially, pretty horses. The motorcycle-riding thing is an old movie and music video cliché, of course—West and director Nick Night may have meant to evoke Top Gun, or Purple Rain, or Mariah Carey and Miguel’s recent video for “Beautiful.” And Kanye has recently said, “I think that … part of my success is my drops of cheesiness.” But this isn’t drops, this is buckets. I have to believe Kanye thought there was something funny about making his video a slightly more NSFW version of a Lisa Frank Trapper Keeper, but who knows.
