Disconnection of water supply to Dalit family prompts intervention by SHRC
The HinduThe Kerala State Human Rights Commission has intervened in the incident in which the Kerala Water Authority disconnected the water supply to a Dalit family comprising visually impaired members citing payment dues. In an order, SHRC chairperson Alexander Thomas directed a senior official of the Water Authority to appear in person before the Commission during its sitting at Thiruvalla on March 14. The order, issued to the Executive Engineer of the Kerala Water Authority’s Thiruvalla office, mandates an explanation within three weeks and immediate steps to restore the water supply. Since losing access to their water supply, the family of Omanakuttan at Peringara has been forced to rely on neighbours and public taps, which function only two days a week.
