Stein’s campaign seeks to block law enabling ad probe

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein’s campaign asked a federal judge on Thursday to strike down a state law that enabled authorities to investigate an ad the campaign ran targeting Stein’s 2020 challenger. O’Neill’s campaign filed a complaint in September 2020 with the State Board of Elections against Stein’s campaign over the ad, which focused on untested rape kits held by local law enforcement agencies. The lawsuit called the ad a “corrective political Wake District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said in a phone interview Thursday that she had recused herself from the case, citing a close working relationship with both Stein and O’Neill. “Why would Stein challenge the constitutionality of a law that prohibits candidates from running false ads to the public, if he claims that he stands by the veracity of his own ad?” O’Neill asked.
