Budget 2025: Will government raise basic exemption limit and cut income tax?

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2025 on February 1, and one of the most awaited announcements will be the tax relief measures for salaried individuals and middle-class taxpayers. Experts believe the budget could bring changes in income tax slabs, raise the basic exemption limit, and deductions under the new tax regime, and deadlines for tax filing, making the system more beneficial for taxpayers. Sandeep Bhalla, Partner, Dhruva Advisors, said, "Revision of Tax Slabs: Increasing the basic exemption limit from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh and raising the threshold for the 30% tax rate from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh would provide substantial relief." Another key expectation is increasing the income limit for the highest 30% tax rate from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, which would benefit many taxpayers by lowering their tax liability. Section 10: Allow salaried taxpayers to claim House Rent Allowance under the new tax regime, which would provide relief to those paying rent.
