North Dakota governor signs bill banning abortion procedure
Associated PressBISMARCK, N.D. — North Dakota Republican Gov. The bill’s primary sponsor, Republican Rep. Luke Simons, a rancher with five children, said the practice is wrong and he hopes that Burgum “signed it big.” Another supporter, Republican Rep. Jeff Hoverson, a pastor with six children, called the measure “a no-brainer” and said he “can’t imagine anyone not being pleased about it.” The bill becomes effective if a federal appeals court or the U.S. Supreme Court allows its enforcement. She has said her facility’s lawyers would wait for a decision in the Arkansas case before deciding on possible legal challenges to North Dakota’s legislation. In his first gubernatorial debate, Burgum did not take a position on abortion, saying he preferred allowing North Dakota residents to vote on abortion issues, instead of the Legislature. After criticism from an opponent, he said in a later debate he would’ve supported some of the nation’s toughest abortion laws passed in North Dakota in 2013, including one that would have banned abortions when a fetal heartbeat can be detected, something that can happen before a woman knows she is pregnant.
