Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane calls for burqa ban in 10th, 12th board exams
The HinduMaharashtra Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Nitesh Rane has called for a ban on the wearing of burqas during next month’s State Board Standard 10 and 12 examinations, citing concerns over exam malpractice and security risks. In a letter addressed to State School Education Minister Dada Bhuse on Wednesday, Mr. Rane, son of Maharashtra former Chief Minister Narayan Rane, stressed the need for “transparent” conduct of the high-stakes exams, scheduled to begin on February 11 for Class 12 and February 21 for Class 10. “If examinees are permitted to wear burqas, it becomes challenging to ascertain whether electronic devices or other unfair means are being used,” Mr. Rane stated in the letter, which was later shared with media outlets. Mr. Rane further alleged that burqas had been “misused” in past exams to smuggle paper chits, declaring, “This is not Pakistan or Afghanistan.” He urged officials to withdraw any existing notifications permitting the garment in educational settings.
