‘You’re going to love Richard’: How Richard Sherman became the Seahawks’ steal of the 2011 NFL Draft
New York TimesSoon after the 2011 NFL Draft, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made a stop at Stanford University at the request of football coach David Shaw, who wanted the insights from Carroll’s 2010 book, “Win Forever,” shared on campus. “I got calls from everybody,” said then-defensive backs coach Derek Mason, who felt teams were underrating Sherman’s potential in the pre-draft process. “He didn’t back down from nobody during the game.” In their brief conversation before that week of practice, Carroll could sense Sherman’s desire to make a name for himself at the Senior Bowl. Shortly after Stanford’s pro day, Sherman tweeted his time was in the “4.43-4.51 range.” But league evaluators were still unsure about his ability to run with NFL wideouts. “I want to prove other NFL Draft websites wrong that say I am the 52nd-ranked CB prospect in their eyes.” Mason recalls lobbying on Sherman’s behalf in pre-draft discussions with teams.
