How Royal Liverpool got ready for the Open Championship
New York TimesHOYLAKE, England — More than 250,000 spectators are expected to walk through the gates at Royal Liverpool this week for the 151st Open Championship. The Athletic spoke to Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, the R&A’s executive director, to break down how they made Royal Liverpool ‘Open ready’… How long has it taken? “The decorators then come in and the carpets begin to get laid and the walls are built.” Around 18 months ago, the R&A started installing fibre-optic cable — totaling 10 miles in length — underground at Royal Liverpool. We now have 17 LED boards around the course.” Because the R&A rotates through Open venues, meaning the tournament will eventually come back to Royal Liverpool, they hope to get between 20-25 years of life out of the underground cables. Despite this, they said it is “fantastic” to welcome the Open back to Royal Liverpool and added how it creates a “buzz,” even though their course is taken over by grandstands and tents aplenty.
