Why Seahawks could keep Geno Smith … and still draft a quarterback early
New York TimesINDIANAPOLIS — The Seahawks are still in the process of negotiating a new contract with Geno Smith. At the same time, Carroll and Schneider made it clear during separate media availabilities at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday afternoon that independent of Smith’s status with the team, Seattle is going to consider selecting a quarterback early in the draft. “We don’t get this opportunity,” Carroll said, referring to how rare it is for Seattle to have one of the top picks in the draft. “That’s why we have to take advantage of this time and this moment, and so we’ll see how it goes.” Carroll also said during an earlier news conference the Seahawks are “totally connected to the quarterbacks coming out.” Hours after Carroll made that remark, Schneider was asked why he’d theoretically invest in Smith and still potentially draft a quarterback early. In that scenario, Schneider’s bluff would make it more likely Seattle ends up in position to draft one of the top two non-quarterbacks available: Alabama edge Will Anderson Jr. or Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter.
