PMK accuses Chennai police of double standards while dealing with plea for protests
The HinduA Pattali Makkal Katchi functionary has moved the Madras High Court alleging the Greater Chennai City Police has been functioning in a biased manner by granting permission for protests by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party but denying the same to the opposition parties in the State. Wondering how the GCCP could have granted permission for the protest to the ruling party in a busy locality that too during peak traffic hours and within 24 hours of taking a decision to conduct such a protest, Mr. Balu said, similar requests made by the opposition parties had been denied by the police recently. “Similar applications made by other opposition parties too were rejected but when it came to the ruling party alone, the police have granted permission within 24 hours. Sekar filed a writ petition seeking a direction to the Home Secretary and Director General of Police to initiate action against Greater Chennai City Commissioner of Police and Saidapet Inspector of Police for allegedly violating Section 41 of the 1888 Act while granting permission for DMK’s protest.
