Retail inflation eases to 6.44% in Feb, but remains above RBI’s target band
Live MintIndia's retail inflation edged down slightly to 6.44 per cent in February from January's three-month high of 6.52 per cent, according to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Monday. However, the inflation print stayed above the Reserve Bank of India's upper tolerance level of 6 per cent for second straight month. The Consumer Price Index based retail inflation was 6.52 per cent in January, after declining to a one-year low level of 5.72 per cent in December. “Unless RBI believe global spillovers are large and negative, I don’t think next meeting’s outlook for a hike changes for now.” The closures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank are prompting traders to pare bets of a US rate increase this month just days after US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell flagged the possibility of returning to bigger rate hikes as inflation proved persistent.
