Suicide on the rise among Indigenous Australians as government commits to lowering rate as part of Closing the Gap

"It is getting worse every year … the crisis is four decades long," said suicide and poverty researcher Gerry Georgatos who has worked in suicide prevention and with incarcerated people for about 25 years. "In the first 10 days of that year we had a crisis of five young First Nations children who took their lives," Mr Georgatos said. The federal government is committed to reducing the number of Indigenous people dying by suicide towards zero over the next seven years as part of its Closing the Gap initiative. 'Weak' efforts to close the gap A report reviewing the National Agreement on Closing the Gap by the Productivity Commission labelled efforts by governments to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as "weak" as well as "slow, uncoordinated and piecemeal".
