His mortal remains were brought to his residence late on Thursday night, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other leaders paid their final respects on Friday, offering condolences to his wife, Gursharan Kaur. The Union Home Ministry announced a seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect, during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India and at Indian missions and high commissions abroad. Widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms, Singh’s legacy includes steering the nation as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 and shaping its economic framework as Finance Minister under the PV Narasimha Rao government.
