Should India’s Insurance Behemoth Be Welcomed Into Banking?

Since nationalisation in 1956, LIC has been fully owned by the government. LIC’s annual report for 2016-17, the latest available, shows that it had a 71 percent share in total first year premium. The money that it collects from policyholders gets invested across a variety of instruments governed by rules laid down by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India. Broadly, LIC invests policyholder funds in government bonds, equity of various companies, corporate bonds and debentures. Even so, it is worth questioning whether IDBI Bank, a lender with bad loans close to a third of its book, makes for a good investment for LIC.
