Gas leak: Chemical unit told to stop production

Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmi Priya and chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority has issued orders stopping production at a chemical factory following leakage of chlorine, at Binga village near Karwar in Uttara Kannada district. Ms. Priya has issued orders for suspension of production till a safety audit is completed. The prohibition orders were issued to suspend production and the authorities were directed to take action regarding safety in the factory, conduct safety audit to prevent any untoward incident from happening in future, and submit a report to the Uttara Kannada District Disaster Relief Committee, said a release. On Saturday, chlorine leaked from a unit of Aditya Birla Grasim Industries Ltd. at Binga village, causing 19 people to fall ill. Of them, 14 people were admitted to the Karwar District Hospital and five were admitted to a hospital on the factory premises.
