Abortion still illegal in Queensland but change could be on the way

While Ireland has just overwhelmingly voted to repeal its ban on abortion, terminating a pregnancy remains a crime in Queensland except in certain circumstances that do not include rape. Under the Criminal Code Act, which dates back to 1899, a woman who "unlawfully" has an abortion in Queensland can be sent to prison for up to seven years. Last year, independent MP Rob Pyne introduced two private member's bills to decriminalise abortion but at the last minute, withdrew the bills, after Liberal MPs indicated they would not support them. Queensland is 'way behind' Sunshine Coast Local Medical Association president Dr Roger Faint said Queensland was "way behind" the rest of Australia. 'It's not the same as having your appendix out' Australian Christian Lobby Queensland director Wendy Francis said abortion was not hard to access in Queensland, estimating about 14,000 abortions a year were performed across the state.
