Canberrans pay more tax than they used to, but less than they think they do
ABCIn less than three months, amid a global health and economic crisis, Canberrans will head to the polls — and one issue is already prominent in the campaign. The Government's 20-year plan is simple enough: abolish a bunch of "inefficient" and volatile taxes — like stamp duty on housing — and replace them with higher rates. Canberrans have been paying less local taxes than other Australians Overall, ACT taxes have risen since the changes began — by about 3.3 per cent a year in real terms per person. The surprise, however, is that Canberrans — statistically the wealthiest Australians by some margin — have paid less in local taxes than most Australians since the tax reform began. In every year except 2018-19, Canberrans paid less than New South Wales residents did — despite the ACT's higher incomes and the shift to land-value taxes.
