How Tamil Nadu Protesters Stopped Federal Tungsten Mining in Madurai’s Heritage Site
The HinduPublished : Jan 28, 2025 23:45 IST - 6 MINS READ Public protests rarely succeed in changing Union government decisions in India. But three months of State government-backed protests against a tungsten mining project in Arittapatti and Nayakkarpatti in Madurai district saw people achieve a rare victory against the Union government. Durai Murugan, the Minister for Water Resources, who moved the resolution, said that “it is condemnable that despite the concerns raised by the government of Tamil Nadu on 3.10.2023 to the Union government not to auction the mining rights for such critical and strategic minerals without the permission of the State government, the Union government disregarded this objection and has proceeded with the auction.” As protests intensified, the Union government said it was willing to meet the protestors’ demands halfway. This, a Ministry of Mines press release dated December 24, 2024, said, was because “State government informed about the existence of biodiversity site covering an area of 193.215 Ha, but did not recommend against conduct of auction of this block.” The Ministry of Mines explained that its role was “limited to the auction of critical minerals in the interest of economic development of the country.” Following this, the remaining formalities were to be completed by the State government. Victory for the agitators Finally, on January 23, 2025, the Union government announced its decision to cancel the auction of the tungsten mining rights.
