Asset monetisation is the only way the country will move forward: Niti Aayog CEO

India Today

The government’s ambitious National Monetisation Pipeline plan has been criticised by the Opposition as a move to benefit private players. Amitabh Kant explained how asset monetisation is the only way the country will move forward. Excerpts: Q: The Opposition says it’s about a revenue-strapped government desperately hiving off valued public assets Asset monetisation is nothing new; it’s been going on for a really long time. Roads have been privatisedThe Maharashtra government has just done asset monetisation of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway; and it’s got a lot of resources out of that. Q: The Congress says this is organised loot and plunder; you’re going to sell away scarce resources, particularly land Whoever says this has a very poor understanding of asset monetisation; and it’s been done all through the Congress period.
