Diane Abbott accuses Rachel Reeves of ‘renewed austerity’
The TelegraphDiane Abbott has accused Rachel Reeves of presiding over an era of “renewed austerity”, with the veteran Labour MP leading a Left-wing backlash against the Chancellor’s spending cuts. The Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP, who had the Labour whip restored shortly before the general election after a prolonged suspension, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Departmental cuts, spending cuts, welfare cuts, cuts to investment. This is renewed austerity.” Ms Abbott, who was in Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet, was readmitted to the Labour Party in May following an internal investigation into a letter she wrote to The Observer suggesting that Jewish people did not experience racism “all their lives”. Her intervention over Ms Reeves’ spending cuts will raise the prospect of another falling out, days after the Prime Minister had faced his first Commons rebellion over the two-child benefit cap.
