The surge in mpox, or monkeypox, cases in parts of Africa has led to the World Health Organization declaring the outbreak of the viral disease a public health emergency of international concern on August 14. Dr Javier Guzman, director of Global Health Policy at the Center for Global Development, in an interview with Rhythma Kaul, discusses how the West should respond to the ongoing threat, the importance of guaranteeing safe and equitable access to vaccines, and the need to improve global systems for pandemic preparedness and response among other things.
