Modi rewrites history as incumbent BJP registers record 6% rise in vote share

India Today

The massive mandate in favour of Narendra Modi rewrote Indian electoral history, making and breaking multiple records. What is more significant is that the saffron party has increased its vote share by 6 per cent. This is historic in the sense that no incumbent majority party ever in the history of Indian elections could increase its vote share at this scale since 1952. The previous record was held by the Congress which registered a 5 per cent rise in vote share in 1984. However, the 6 per cent gain for the BJP in this election is more significant as it is not only the highest ever for an incumbent majority party, but also because the saffron party could break grounds in states such as West Bengal and Odisha, where it only had marginal presence till recently.
