Black Sea grain deal eased global food prices — now it's off and analysts are warning of a price 'roller-coaster'

Russia's withdrawal last night from a pact that saw millions of tonnes of grain shipped from the Black Sea has already sparked fears of another spike in global food prices. Supply chain issues caused by the pandemic had already fuelled global food price rises through late 2021, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 saw prices spike even further. However a deal, brokered by the UN and Türkiye, to get Ukrainian grain exports flowing from three ports on the Black Sea, is largely credited with helping to ease food price inflation throughout 2022. "And secondly, there's been a few countries who've said they'll guarantee the safety of Ukrainian grain shipments, even if Russia doesn't sign back on to the export deal."
