Reeves’ NHS pay rise to wipe out savings from winter fuel allowance
The TelegraphBaroness Altmann, the former pensions minister, said the Chancellor’s decision was unfair on pensioners who now faced financial hardship over the winter months. She said: “It is heartbreaking to see the priorities the Government has assigned to the poorer pensioners – there seems to be this blind spot, that pensioners can manage without money.” Lady Altmann noted that the threshold to receive pension credit was low and around 800,000 people who were eligible did not claim it and would miss out on the winter fuel payments. Many cannot even go on to the street to protest as they are not well enough.” She feared more pensioners would feel unable to afford to heat their homes this winter, resulting in additional health problems which in turn would pile pressure on to the NHS – including the doctors in receipt of new pay rises. Lady Altmann said: “That will end up potentially costing more money to the Government than they are saving on the £300 winter fuel payment.
