Beyond Haridwar Dharam Sansad, a look at recent cases of hate speech
India TodayThe Uttarakhand police have booked Wasim Rizvi, former UP Shia Central Waqf Board chairman who converted to Hinduism recently, for making hate speech at a Dharam Sansad in Haridwar. In similar cases of alleged provocative speech, cases were lodged under Indian Penal Code Sections 295A, 188, 298 and 34 for outraging religious feelings by insulting a religion or religious beliefs, and organising an event without permission from the district administration. SHARJEEL IMAM The Allahabad High Court in November 2021 granted bail to former Jawaharlal Nehru University student and activist Sharjeel Imam in the sedition case registered against him for his speech at Aligarh Muslim University made during protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act on January 16, 2020. Sharjeel Imam would remain in jail as he was also booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in connection with Northeast Delhi riots.
