EDWARD LUCAS: Elon Musk should be in the dock over social media lies that have led violent thugs to rampage through our streets

The thugs and bigots rampaging through our streets in the dreadful days since the Southport stabbings deserve severe punishment for their violent crimes. But having spent decades dealing with Russian disinformation, I can say that it smells and looks to me like a Kremlin propaganda outlet aiming not to promote Vladimir Putin’s regime, but to sow dissension and mistrust in western societies – a Russian tactic for many years. When Elon Musk bought the ailing Twitter platform two years ago, accounts with verifiable owners still benefited from a ‘blue tick’ – an award which prevented pranksters and fraudsters impersonating public figures, mainstream media outlets and businesses. That’s why, at a cursory glance, EuropeInvasion looks like a regular media outlet – with the ‘blue tick’ stamp of authenticity for which someone, somewhere, has presumably paid. Musk also lifted the ban Twitter had imposed on such divisive figures as the far-Right firebrand who goes by the name Tommy Robinson and has been blamed for helping fuel the violent unrest now scarring our towns and cities through his posts on social media.
